You can choose to do 1, 2, 3, or 4 Words per line in each prompt, except for the INNOVATIVE PROMPTS. The prompt must have either 1 word each line throughout the entire poem, 2 words each line throughout the entire poem, 3 words each line throughout the entire poem, or 4 words each line throughout the entire poem. But you cannot mix it.

The thing I most hate about Meme is that many who participate want to be read, but they don’t take the time to read. Memes, especially this one, is about reciprocity. Tit for Tat! If you desire to be read, then read. It also helps your creativity. It’s good to practice on our “personal” voices. We can do that much better if we can listen and/or read each others, this way we can hear our voice so much better.

I love acrostics and I love reading them. If I take the time and you don’t, well there is no balance … and I don’t know about you, but I love balance in all things.

I want to take this opportunity give my friend Leo a shout-out for helping me to keep this blog running while I work on our first Acrostic Anthology. It’s a lot of work … but I am hanging in there.

The last four months have been real hard on me, health wise. I had a lot of health issues, and a bad cancer scare. I am healing just find, and I so thank you all for caring.

I have begun working on Acrostic Only Anthology again. I can’t say what the publication date will be right now, but will let you know as soon as I can.

I thank Leo for helping me out here at AO, and will have to rely on him to continue if he has the time. My time will be getting the anthology ready for publication.

I am sorry about the awards system being down, when I got sick, the judges dropped the ball. I am working on getting some new judges, and hopefully we can get back on track. If you know someone who would like to serve as a judge let me know.

Thank you all for your prayers and support. I got to say, it feels good walking, but it’s painful and I will have to take it one day at a time.

Dear Poets, and I dare say, Friends ….

I am sorry for my absent, but my health went south on me, and I had to take care of it. However, I am back at home and hope to bring everything up to date, but please be patience with me.

Here in America, the month of April is the deadline for filing Income Taxes, and everyone is frantic about paying the Government on time so as not to be penalized.
Also, I have discovered that its vacation time for the three judges, who volunteer for Acrostic Only. I apologize for the lateness of April’s result; I will try and get temporary judges to do the honors. However, it will take a little more time.

I can see that so far there has not been much participation, and it might be due to the fact that I got sick and has been unable to read and encourage our young poets, if this is the case --- than allow me to say, my absent should never stop you from creating. It’s like saying if I should drop dead you all would stop writing --- and this should never be the case.

I thank Leo for looking out for AO, and although I am still bed-ridden, I shall get to work soon.

Without growth life can get pretty boring, and here at AO we are always trying to find ways around boredom. Since the majority of us are working on perfecting our poetic writing skills, we will try a different approach to creating acrostics. We have had a wonderful first year as a baby group. We learned a lot from each other, and spent most of that time supporting and encouraging each other. Part of our encouragement system was issuing awards. This year, things will change. We will still keep the “awards” system, however, there will only be seven (7) awards issued per month, and one (1) annual award. Therefore it will get a little bit more challenging to win an award. The following is a list of monthly and annual awards offered by Acrostic Only:

Monthly Awards: - Only seven (7) awards will be issued.

Poet of the Month Award (POM) – The poet who has written the most creative or inspiring acrostic of the month will receive this award.
Most Active Poet of the Month Award (MAP) – Two (2) awards will be issued in this category. The Poet who submits the most poems for the month, and one Runner-Up will receive this award.
Best Acrostic Poem Award (BAP) – Two (2) awards will be issued. One for Best Acrostic Poem of the Month, and the other, Honorable Mention.
Best Acrostic Story of the Month Award (BAS) - Two (2) awards issued; one for "Best Acrostic Story for the Month", and the other Honorable Mention.)

Poet of the Year Award (POY) – One (1) award issued for Poet Of The Year. For details on POY, click HERE.

Introduction to Acrostic Only

INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to Acrostic Only. I am a lover of acrostic poetry and all its confinements, which allows me to be free. As such I have created this blog to share my take on acrostic and to learn from others.

Acrostic Only is about encouraging writers to prefect their individual artist abilities in writing acrostic. Our philosophy is practice makes perfect.

Acrostic is a poem or series of lines in which certain letters, usually the first in each line, form a name, motto, or message when read in sequence.1

Word History: An acrostic gives the reader two for one, and the etymology of the word emphasizes one of these two. Our word goes back to the Greek word akrostikhis, "acrostic," which is a combination of Greek akron, "head," and stikhos, "row, line of verse." Literally akrostikhis means "the line at the head," emphasizing the fact that an acrostic has in addition to horizontal rows a vertical row formed of the letters at the "head" or start of each line. In ancient manuscripts, in which a line of verse did not necessarily correspond to a line of text, an acrostic would have looked particularly striking, with each of its lines standing by itself and beginning with a capital letter. Our word for this type of composition is first found in English in the 16th century.1

The greatness of an Acrostic lies in its simplicity. An Acrostic’s beauty is arrayed in very few words. To master this style, one must keep the clutter out, while creatively expressing the prompt. Acrostic, like any other style of poetry, is not for everyone, oh but it’s so much fun!

On the flip side of this coin, one must always keep in mind, to master another style of writing is fun, but to make it your own, by creatively injecting it with your innovative skills of expression, is better. This is how new styles are created and mimic.

ACROSTIC ONLY WORKSHOP:

There is no wrong or right way to write an acrostic poem, with the exception of a few basic rules:

capitalized and/or bold the first letters
do not break the word up into syllables
keep to the subject throughout your acrostic
use few words to convey your message
be creative ...

Keeping these basic rules in mind, one can do just about anything with it as long as you stick to the subject of the Acrostic; from free styling, syllables counts, rhyming, or a combination of them all. But in doing so, you must remember to follow the rules of the acrostic as it relates to line count and subject matter. Also be creative.

If you have new questions, or would like for one of your poem to be critique, just post it. Critiques are done when I have the time.

PROMPTS:

This is a monthly Meme which consist of 12 Prompts. Six regular prompts, and six innovative acrostic prompts. It's writer's choice, chose one, or all. But you are limited to one poem per prompt.

If you are SERIOUS about your writing, these are the prompts for you. Carefully follow instructions on each prompt, always keeping in mind the basic elements of what makes an acrostic.

The trick to writing a good acrostic is to do a little research on the subject, even if it's just looking the word up in the dictionary, then creatively making it yours. Remember, you have 30 days to do these prompts, which gives you time to really get off into your art. So, be creative, be active, but most of all have fun.

There will be only four awards issued a month. One award and one honorable mentioned for "Best Acrostic Poem" and one award and one honorable mentioned for "Best Innovative Acrostic".
